Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery

We perform minimally invasive surgery, using smaller incisions to treat your condition. These techniques result in a shorter, more comfortable recovery and a lower risk of complications.

Trinity Health Of New England specializes in minimally invasive techniques, including robotic surgery. Our expert surgeons use the advanced precision of robotic technology for a wide range of surgeries, from complex operations to outpatient procedures.

Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery: Why Choose Trinity Health Of New England?

We offer minimally invasive and robotic surgery at hospitals and surgery centers across Connecticut and Massachusetts. At Trinity Health Of New England, you’ll find:

    • Experience with robotic surgery: We were among the first in the area to offer robotic surgery. Our surgeons have extensive experience performing procedures using da Vinci® Surgical Systems, providing the most precise, effective procedure possible.
    • Advanced technology: Our surgical teams use the newest navigation and robotic technology to provide excellent precision and control during intricate procedures, such as brain surgery and spinal fusion.
    • Robotic-assisted outpatient surgery: We were the first in New England to offer robotic-assisted surgery in a surgery center. Our teams deliver precise surgical solutions and quicker recovery in an outpatient setting.
    • Reduced recovery time: Minimally invasive procedures result in smaller incisions, less scarring and a shorter, more comfortable recovery.

What to expect before and after surgery

Robotic Surgery at Trinity Health Of New England

During robotic surgery, we make small incisions and insert surgical instruments and a tiny camera to access the affected area. Our specially trained surgeons operate from a nearby computer console showing high-definition, 3D images.

The robotic arms mimic the movements of the surgeon’s hands, often bending and rotating in ways that human hands cannot. The imaging and robotic arms give the surgeon excellent precision and control during your procedure. Robotic techniques lead to a more targeted surgery.

Benefits of minimally invasive and robotic surgery include:

    • Smaller incisions
    • Reduced pain
    • Lower risk of complications, including infection
    • Reduced blood loss
    • Shorter hospital stay
    • Quicker recovery time
    • Less scarring

Surgery with the da Vinci robot

We perform robotic surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System. We’ve equipped every Trinity Health Of New England hospital with this leading-edge robotic technology. Robotic surgery is also available in select surgery centers. Our surgeons bring the precision and control of this system to both complex operations and routine procedures, including outpatient surgery.

We use robotic surgery for a wide range of surgical specialties including:

Advanced robotic-assisted surgery

We offer the newest advances in robotic technology to assist surgeons during surgery. At the Minimally Invasive Spine Center of New England at Mercy Medical Center, surgeons perform spine surgery using the Globus ExcelsiusGPS®, a leading-edge robotic navigation platform. This device pairs advanced navigation with the stability of a robotic arm for excellent precision and control during delicate procedures.

Laparoscopic and Other Minimally Invasive Surgery Procedures

In addition to robotic surgery, we offer a range of other minimally invasive surgeries. During these procedures, such as laparoscopy, the surgeon makes several small incisions. We insert a thin, flexible tube with an attached video camera (called an endoscope) and other tiny surgical instruments. Guided by the video images, the surgeon performs a precise procedure.

Surgeons at Trinity Health Of New England perform minimally invasive surgery whenever possible. Our providers offer all types of minimally invasive surgeries, including:

    • Arthroscopic, to treat joints
    • Laparoscopic, used to operate in the abdomen or pelvis
    • Thoracoscopic, also called video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), to treat conditions in the chest cavity
