Pharmacy Services
271 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104

The Pharmacy Department at Mercy Medical Center provides a full range of services for hospital patients, physicians and staff. The Pharmacy Department is responsible for the procurement, storage, distribution and control of all drugs within the hospital. The Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, composed of pharmacists, physicians, nurses and administrators, is responsible for deciding what drugs will be used in the hospital and appropriate protocols and monitoring necessary for safe and effective use of these drugs.

Physician orders for medications are sent to the pharmacy to be entered into the computerized drug profile for each hospitalized patient. The pharmacist reviews the order for medication appropriateness and correct dosing for the patient’s medical condition. The pharmacist also checks for drug interactions, drug allergies and drug/food interactions before the medication is dispensed. In general, medications are dispensed in a unit of use packaging (“unit dose”) with a 24-hour supply. The Pharmacy Department also mixes IV and patient nutritional medications.

Mercy’s Pharmacy Department has a clinical pharmacist with an advanced degree (Pharm. D.) on staff to work with patients, physicians and nurses to ensure the most optional drug therapy, provide drug information and drug consultation services. The department is also affiliated with a pharmacy college to provide education and training for students. In addition to employing pharmacists, pharmacy technicians assist in drug preparation and delivery after the work is approved by a supervising pharmacist. The Pharmacy Department’s hours are 6:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
