Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

Mercy Medical Center’s Sr. Caritas Cancer Center has added the latest in cancer treatment – Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). IMRT is an approach to radiation therapy that delivers a high, targeted dose to the cancer tumor while restricting the exposure to surrounding tissue.

The benefits of IMRT include:

Potentially Higher Cure Rates - IMRT enables higher doses of radiation for destroying the tumor, regardless of size, shape or location.

Fewer Side Effects - IMRT uses computer-generated images to plan and then deliver even more tightly focused radiation beams, thereby sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

Option of Re-treatment - IMRT may make re-treatment feasible, since healthy tissue initially received less radiation than with conventional therapy. The radiation beams are planned to avoid critical structures.

Broader Applications - IMRT brings the advantages of radiation therapy to a wider range of cancer patients, including patients with difficult-to-reach tumors or tumors located close to vital organs.

Better Quality of Life - IMRT is a noninvasive radiation therapy with better recovery; patients do not have to endure a lengthy rehabilitation due to reduction of side effects as seen in conventional therapy.
