Programs and Services for Expectant and New Parents
Preregistration is required for all classes. All programs open to the community. Some programs may be reimbursed by insurance. For registration or more information call the Parenting Education Department at 748-7295.
Childbirth Education Program
This weekly series helps prepare expectant parents for the birth of their child by providing information on all the basics of labor and delivery, baby care and a tour of the Family Life Center.. Recommend attend during the 7th or 8th month of pregnancy. All partners/labor support persons welcome.
Childbirth Education “Express” Programs
Several weekend “express programs” are available. The two-day class covers the same information as the Childbirth Education Program but with less time for practice and review. The one-day class is designed for teaching all the “basics” of labor and delivery and included a tour of the Family Life Center. Recommended attend during the 7th or 8th month of pregnancy. All partners/labor support persons welcome.
Relaxation for Childbirth
This class is for mothers to be, partners, and support persons looking to expand on relaxation techniques during labor and birth. Designed for women having medicated or non-medicated births or cesarean delivery to promote a relaxed and calm environment. The class focuses basics of labor and delivery with mediation and deep relaxation techniques. Recommend attend during the 6th month. Taught by a certified childbirth educator also trained in Hypnobirthing.
Big Brother/Big Sister Class
This free one hour class prepares children ages 3 to 7 for the arrival of a new baby. Activities include a story, discussion, safety issues, diapering of dolls and a tour of the Family Life Center for Maternity.
Special Program for Teens
Tour Night for Teens/Teens Preparing for Childbirth Class
Join for a tour of the Family Life Center followed by a one night class on understanding labor and delivery.
Topics include: stages of labor, timing contractions, relaxation, medication choices, getting ready for baby. All dads/partners/labor support persons are welcome.
Bringing Up Baby
Baby Boot Camp
Expectant mothers and partners learn how to take care of your newborn baby and what to expect when the new baby arrives. Learn basic newborn care, newborn characteristics, infant behavior, signs of illness, safety at home and ways to calm baby. Infant CPR. Taught by Pediatrician and Childbirth Educator
The Breastfeeding Center
Programs and Support Services for the Breastfeeding Mother. Pre-Registration required for all classes. For more information or to register call the Parenting Education Dept. at 748-7295.
Expectant Mother’s Breastfeeding Class
This monthly 2 hour class is for expectant parents considering or planning to breastfeed. Taught by a Lactation Consultant. Preregistration is required.
Breastfeeding and Returning to Work
Planning to return to work or school? This class for breastfeeding mothers will offer tips making an easier transition. Topics include selection of a breast pumps, pumping basics and maintaining your milk supply, childcare routines. Taught by a Lactation Consultant. Recommend attend 7th or 8th month of pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Consultation Line
Free breastfeeding support line. A certified lactation consultant is available to answer your breastfeeding concerns or questions before and after baby. Call Line 748-7262.
Private Lactation Consultations
A certified lactation consultant is available for private, individual consults. To schedule a specific appointment call 413-748-7262 or visit the walk-in hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-2 p.m.
