Center of Excellence in the Treatment of Brain and Spinal Disorders

Welcome to New England Neurosurgical Associates
There are many reasons people may need the expert care provided by our practice. We have experience in the surgical treatment of conditions involving the brain, spine and nerves.

It is our goal to alleviate symptoms without surgery. But if surgery is necessary, we will choose a treatment plan that minimizes patient discomfort.

We have expertise in the latest techniques and access to the most advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies available today.

Your First Visit
After you have scheduled your initial visit to NENA, our staff will give you a detailed questionnaire to be completed prior to or upon your arrival at the office. Please complete this form as accurately as possible since this information will play an important role in your evaluation and treatment. Please bring all appropriate x-rays, CT and MRI scans to your appointment. Reports are helpful but are not a substitute for the actual x-ray pictures or other images.

During your visit, the doctor will ask you about your medical history and your symptoms. You will also receive a focused neurological examination. We will review your diagnostic studies, x-rays, CT or MRI scans that may have been obtained by your referring physician. If additional tests are required to assist in diagnosis, we will order them at the conclusion of your visit. On completion of your visit you will be presented with a treatment plan. We strive to involve the patient in the treatment and decision making process.

Diagnosis
Our treatment team will review your diagnostic images (x-ray, MRI, CT), any additional test, and the results of your diagnostic interview and your medical history. We will make recommendations for a treatment plan and discuss your condition and treatment options with you.

Treatment Options
When we discuss treatment options, we will give you information about the benefits and risks and assist you in making a decision that is best for you. If surgery is an option, you will see the surgeon and receive counseling about the procedure that is being recommended. You may also be referred to our internet information page where you can view educational information at your convenience.

Drs. Kamal Kalia, Christopher Comey and Natasha McKay
Treatment Options May Include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Interventional pain management techniques, such as epidural steroid injections
  • Medications
  • Exercise and conditioning programs
  • Chiropractic, acupuncture therapies
  • Surgery

Payment
We will assist you by filing your insurance claims after each visit. We will also assist in obtaining the pre-certifications that are required for diagnostic testing, surgery or second opinions.

We accept most insurance plans, including PPOs, HMOs, Worker’s Compensation, and Medicare. Please check with your insurance to verify our participation in your plan prior to scheduling your appointment. You are responsible for paying any claims that are not covered by insurance. If your insurance plan requires a physician referral authorization number, bring that with you or have it called in to us ahead of time. We also ask that you pay any co-payment required by your insurance carrier at the time of your visit.

Medications
You may be given prescriptions and instructions for medication necessary for your treatment. If you have a problem with a medication or need a refill and are not planning an office visit, please call us during office hours so we can assist you.

  • Prescription refill requests should be made two to three days before your last dose. We will call you if the prescription cannot be refilled or if we have questions. Narcotic pain medication cannot be prescribed by the on-call physician.

Emergencies
If you have a medical emergency after office hours, please go to the Mercy Medical Center Emergency Room or nearest hospital. Be sure to give the name of your physician from our practice, so that the hospital emergency physician can contact us about your condition. The NENA on-call physician can be contacted through the answering service.
