Orthopedic Surgeons With Expertise and Advanced Training

Orthopedic surgeons treat injuries and conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system of bones, joints, muscles and connective tissues. Connective tissues include ligaments, which connect bones and hold joints together, and tendons, which connect muscle to bone.

At Trinity Health Of New England, our orthopedic surgeons work closely with a robust team of dedicated health care professionals to provide comprehensive care and rehabilitation. You’ll find experienced orthopedic surgeons with specialized training in several areas:

    • Joint replacement: Reconstruction and total or partial replacement of joints using advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques and robotic-assisted technologies
    • Orthopedic oncology: Treatment of cancerous and noncancerous tumors in bones and soft tissues
    • Orthopedic spine care: Surgical and nonsurgical treatment for injuries and conditions that affect the neck and back
    • Sports medicine: Nonsurgical treatment and arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques to manage all sports injuries
    • Trauma: Surgical and nonsurgical care to treat serious bone and soft tissue injuries

Orthopedic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Procedures

Our goals for treatment are to successfully repair injuries and treat conditions to help you get back to your daily activities. We begin your care with nonsurgical treatment, such as physical therapy or injections.

If you need more advanced treatment, our orthopedic surgeons specialize in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted procedures and open surgery. Many of our surgeries are outpatient procedures, so you can go home the same day.

    • Minimally invasive orthopedic procedures:

Whenever possible, we use minimally invasive techniques, typically making smaller incisions rather than traditional long incisions. Minimally invasive procedures can help minimize pain, reduce the risk of complications and shorten your recovery time. Your surgeon will discuss options with you to determine the right procedure for your needs. Examples of minimally invasive procedures include:
      • Arthroscopy: Surgery using a scope (a thin instrument attached to a tiny camera) and miniature instruments to treat injuries inside the joint
      • Anterior hip replacement: Approach that accesses the hip through a small incision, using manual or robotic-assisted techniques, in the front (anterior) of the hip to position the artificial joint
      • Percutaneous fracture fixation: Procedure for complex fractures that uses small incisions and advanced imaging to reposition bone, attaching hardware such as screws to hold bones in place
      • Posterolateral hip replacement: Approach that uses manual or robotic-assisted techniques to access the hip through a small incision on the side of the hip, to position the artificial joint

    • Open orthopedic surgery:

In many situations, open (traditional) surgery provides more effective treatment, usually with one longer incision. At Trinity Health Of New England, we perform open surgery for:
      • Shoulder replacement: Replacement or repair of damaged cartilage and bone in the ball and socket parts of the shoulder joint
      • Knee replacement: Removal of damaged cartilage and bone at the end of one or both leg bones in the knee joint, replacing them with implants
      • Hip replacement: Removal and replacement of damaged cartilage and bone with artificial materials for the ball and/or socket parts of the hip joint
      • Revision surgery: Procedures to correct problems that developed after a previous or replace artificial implants that have worn out
      • Tendon and ligament repair: Repair, reconstruction or reattachment of tendons or ligaments to bones and muscles
      • Fracture repair: Open surgery to reposition bone fragments in complex fractures and place hardware to hold them in place

    • Robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery: Some of our orthopedic surgeons use robotic equipment to assist with some joint replacement and spine surgeries. Your surgeon works with you to determine whether robotic-assisted surgery may be right for you. Surgical robots offer potential advantages such as:
      • Real-time video imaging, which reduces your radiation exposure from X-ray imaging
      • Enhanced precision when positioning artificial implants in joint replacement and screws in spine surgery, which can improve safety during surgery
      • Smaller incisions, in some cases, which can reduce pain and recovery time
